Horses have changed the world in many ways. In 1872, Governor Stanford of California had a bet with friends that all four feet of a horse were momentarily suspended in air in the trot. To prove this point, advances were made in photography to take a succession of photos in 1/6000 of a second! With the resultant photos, he proved that horses did have all four feet off the ground twice during each stride. This form of photography laid the foundation for Thomas Edison to invent the “kinetiscope” which laid the foundation for motion pictures.
