Thousands of years ago in a place where the ice hadn't covered the land, wondering whether winter would ever end, humans and the horses first made friends. Except possibly for the dog, no animal has contributed more to humanity than the horse. It has fed and sheltered us, and provided us with clothing and transportation; it has been both worshipped as a god and slaughtered to appease the gods.
The Navajo Indians were most memorable in history for using the horse to improve upon their lives. Horses were used to hunt; mainly buffaloes. They gave them in independence they never quite had. They believed the horse gave them their freedom.
In the 1930’s, the government was reorganizing with the “New Deal,” which brought with it the Indian Reorganization Act. In this act, Indian’s horses were deemed worthless, were confiscated and slaughtered. This took the Indian communities into poverty. Years later, this government intervention would be reversed.
